Hello Hawaii Travelers,

We are getting quite close to the big Hawaii Trip and things are coming into very clear view now. I appreciate those of you that have sent me your payments for the Game, Tailgate and game transportation. The dinner plan is finalized for Friday evening at Tommy Bahamas Restaurant. I have attached a PDF flyer for this event. The total cost per person is $138.00. This includes 2 hours of beer, wine and well drinks and a nice sit down dinner with a choice of soup/salad and entrees of Fish, Chicken, Ribs or Steak plus a choice of dessert. The party will be on the rooftop at the Tommy Bahama Restaurant. See this trip advisor link: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g60982-d8805974-Reviews-Tommy_Bahama_Restaurant_Bar_Store-Honolulu_Oahu_Hawaii.html. For a nice 3 hour event with all your food and drinks for an evening with a spectacular view of Waikiki….. I could not find a better spot and option for us after some serious research, so, I hope most everyone will attend. The attached flyer has info on how to pay me for this as I have had to do this with paying an advance deposit and then paying the bill at the restaurant that night, so I will collect in advance via paypal or check to me. See the flyer.
Here is the schedule of events so far:

1730 Meet at the Hale Koa Beach Bar for a pre-event of the Luau Dinner

Post Blue and Gold plus 30 minutes buses depart for hotels.
Sunday 1200-1900 Buses will depart hotels for Rich Tilghman’s house for Class Pool and Beach Party at Kailua Beach (Hawaii’s best beach). Cost is TBA, we will get back to you soon with more details on cost and payment options.
I will be reaching out next week with a list of who has paid me and who has not, but please get me your money for the paid events prior to the 15th as I have to pay in advance and will be covering funds out of pocket if I do not receive your money and you still want to attend. This will make my life easier not having to chase people down for money, if I have to, you owe me beers! So, enjoy the last month of summer and get ready for this amazing Hawaii Trip. Please reach out to me with any questions or changes or cancellations (hopefully none).

While I finalize the plans for our Friday night “main” event dinner party for USNA ’85, I wanted to get the word out as to the decision. We will do the Island Bar package and the Mahaka Dinner package. Open the PDF attached and take a look. The total minus Tax and Gratuity is $105 so far with dinner and our cocktail hour. The rep from Tommy Bahama recommended doing an hour of just cocktails and may pay for an appetizer to be passed and then carrying over the bar service while we are seated and eat our dinners. I think a GREAT idea. I will let everyone know the final total on this event once I sign the contract and figure out how to collect the money. Most of you have have been great about letting me know about your attendance for just the diner event now that I have a place and a price. If you have not, I will figure out the count when I start collecting money. As of now, it looks like about 60 of us for the dinner on Friday. Stay tuned! Everything else is coming together nicely and I am please to see a few late arrivals to our group and we welcome them! Thanks again and our trip is getting closer. Navy is an early 17 point favorite in the game, I like that!! More push ups for Charlie Giles and Rich Tilghman.

Greetings Class of ’85,

It’s time for an update on things as we are about to begin the 2018 Football Season. First off, I am proud to say we are taking nearly 100 Classmates and families/friends to Honolulu for the opening game of the 2018 Navy Season on September 1st against the U of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. There is still availability for this weekend if you want to join us. I am finalizing my ticket, tailgate and Class dinner numbers on August 15th. So, be like a few others who just said: “What the H… We are going to Hawaii”. Airfares seem to be pretty reasonable and I can still get you the Class group rate at the Marriott Waikiki Beach. If you are interested, contact me ASAP. If anyone who thought they had signed up for this trip and you have not been receiving our small group emails and texts, you NEED to contact me ASAP. Next, I am finalizing plans for the October 27th game against Notre Dame in San Diego. Although our class block of tickets is sold out, you can get them from other sources and still join us in San Diego for the weekend. That schedule of events will be published in the next few weeks and I will start collecting money for the tailgate and Friday night cocktail reception. We will be over 170 strong in San Diego or more likely over 200, so why not get on board NOW with this trip?? We will have a Thursday night kickoff happy hour in the Gas Lamp district, Friday night cocktail party, Saturday pre and post game indoor tailgate at the Quad Pub in the Gas Lamp quarter and of course the game. I am looking for someone who lives in San Diego who might like to organize a golf outing for Thursday or Friday morning in San Diego. Classmate Jim Berdeguez and I are designing an ’85 Special Edition Football Jersey for sale starting that weekend to commemorate this event.

Our normal Class of ’85 Tailgate parties will be on for all home games this season. That information will be provided as we get closer to our first home game. If you are coming to a Navy game, you know that ’85 will always have a great tailgate. I am working on events for the Army/Navy weekend, so if you happen to live in Philly and want to help me out, I am appreciative of some help for this year’s game on December 8th. Also, if you live in a city where there is a Navy away game and want to put a class event together, I welcome anyone doing that. Now that Navy plays in the AAC, we play in some fun places. Also, I have started working our 35th Reunion in September of 2020. This is tentative and based on Navy finalizing the 2020 football schedule, BUT, I am looking at a home game now scheduled for September 12, 2020 (Hint: Save the date UFN). Westin Hotel reserved and exploring great options for all events. I will be starting a committee next year for help with all major events of our reunion. (I am getting too old to do all this stuff solo any more).

Enjoy the remainder of your summer and start thinking about Navy football and joining your classmates in Hawaii, San Diego, Annapolis or Philadelphia this season.

As always, Go Navy…. Beat Army! (and everyone else)

Hawaii Travelers,

I think I have found the perfect event for us for Friday evening the 31st. The Marriott Waikiki is a little disappointing on the space they are offering to us without paying some crazy expensive banquet fee. After a lengthy search, I found the rooftop bar at the Tommy Bahama’s Restaurant. An open air terrace area (Check out Trip Advisor: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g60982-d8805974-Reviews-Tommy_Bahama_Restaurant_Bar_Store-Honolulu_Oahu_Hawaii.html). I have attached a group event menu and really like the MAKAHA Dinner menu for $65 per person, plus gratuity, tax and service fee. They can do a happy hour, cash bar, prior to the dinner for us on this beautiful open air top floor patio you see in the pictures on Trip Advisor. So, I want to pull the trigger on this event and I assume those of you who came to Hawaii for this game are looking for a classy event something like this for our Friday night Class party. So, feedback appreciated and if you cannot make it, please let me know because I will eventually have to give them a firm number. My guess is you will spend $100 per person if you have a few drinks and dinner, but it’s Waikiki and that is not hard to do at a decent restaurant. Thanks and I will look forward to feedback from our group…. OR suggestions of anyone has one. I have spent a few days talking to different restaurants who could handle 80 or so people for a group event in a nice setting and I keep coming back to this place. PLUS…. well reviewed on Trip Advisor and Yelp and a few locals I know who gave me recommendations.
Okay ’85, let me know.
Thanks.  Bob

Hello Hawaii Travelers,     If you can open this link from your phones, you will get an invite to the ’85 group on whatsapp so you can be part of the group texts going forward.

Here is where we are with everything as of today:

Current head count:
Total Weekend Adults 91
Total Weekend Child 2
Total Happy Hour 82
Total Tailgate Adults 91
Total tailgate Child 4
Total Bus Trans 61
Total Footbal Tix 95
(30 for Barge tour Thursday (Full) and full on the Friday morning Rich Tilghman tour, numbers building for Sunday victory party at Kailua Beach)

I do not have the numbers for the Luau, but I know we are getting close to 50 seats we had reserved plus an additional 20 from the Winkler group. The Admiral Barge tour is full at 30. I am still working the Friday night Happy Hour/Dinner event. I am actively looking at places we can have a happy hour and dinner all together and there are some interesting options I am exploring. I will put that information out once I have a firm agreement in place. For example, however: Tommy Bahama’s Rooftop restaurant, The Eating House, The Yard House, Bill’s Steakhouse just to mention a few. The Saturday Tailgate will be a $50 per head fee to cover catered food, beer and wine for 3 hours prior to the game. I will publish the menu, but there will be grilled foods, sides and other appetizers (sounds yummy). The transportation to and from the game will be provided at the cost of $25 per person and get us there for at least 3 full hours of tailgating (this will leave a little extra for driver gratuity). Game tickets are $40 each and we will be sitting as a group as best they can accommodate a group our size (Lower level end zone). These are better seats then the Navy Ticket office could sell us since I am dealing with the local ticket office in Hawaii direclty. So, I will need to collect for the game tickets, the tailgate and the bus transport in advance. For those of you attending the Rich Tilghman event, transportion will also be $25 per person round trip from the hotels.
So, here is how we will do this: I have a Paypal Account at: md11driver85@gmail.com. I would REALLY prefer you send me your payments via PayPal and send it to “Friends and Family”so that a service fee is not charged. In the notes, indicate what your paying me for. For example: 2 Tailgate, 2 Football and 2 Bus (that would be $230). Add up what you owe for the events you are attending and send that amount. If…. you cannot or do not want to use PayPal, send me a personal check to:

776 S. Angola Road
Coldwater, MI 49036

PLEASE indicate on your envelope: Hawaii Trip and inside add a note about what events you are paying me for. I would appreciate all checks NLT August 10th as payments are due to vendors by the 15th. When we get the dinner plan into place for Friday in the next week or so, expect that news. I am planning for a nice event with drinks, dinner in a nice atmosphere so expect to spend $50 at least per person or more for a nice evening out with classmates. Dress code will be “tropical” nice casual. For me, golf shorts and a Hawaiian or golf shirt and a sun dress for my lovely wife in case you need to know. (you are welcome wives!). Refunds?? In case you need to cancel, I can do refunds up until August 16th, after that, we are locked into firm numbers.
I can remember looking at this game at our last USNA ’85 Reunion and saying: “What if?”….. Well, just like Dublin and Jacksonville and San Diego later this season, “What if” has become: WOW, Look at us!! Get yourself onto the Whatsapp Chat if you want real time updates (this becomes important as we get closer to the weekend or while we are in Oahu trust me!) Send me your money for events and start practicing your Hulu dancing. (And for Charlie Giles, get your Speedo collection to the dry cleaners, light starch). You know where to find me if you need me. Looking forward to an AMAZING weekend in the Big 50! I never thought we could top Dublin, BUT….. I am getting a feeling that we just might do that here. Go Navy as always!! Bob Smith ‘85

PS – And BRACE UP if you miss this amazing opportunity. Note, we have a group of 20 Classmates/friends from Atlanta with the Winklers who are in addition to the current group of 43…. GREAT turnout.

“Menu for Evening Meal: Roast Pig on a spit, lots of rum drinks…. Yummy Side dishes and perhaps Lyonaise potatoes.”

Dear Fellow Hawaii travelers,
I am proud to say this because up until a few days ago, I was organizing this trip without being able to attend it. Good luck and some creative scheduling by my wife and I have allowed for us to make the trip over to Honolulu for the game, get some beach time and join everyone for a few days of socializing and a Navy win against Hawaii. I have to admit, I was slightly jealous and now I am just excited to able to enjoy this time with all of you. First off, let me thank Rich Tilghman and Ashley Yetman again for the work they have put into helping me arrange for events and offering their time (a precious commodity). And Rich for offering up his home and pool for a party at the victory celebration the day after the game. This all being said, here is where we stand with events:
1) Thursday August 30 at 0845 the tour of Pearl Harbor on the Admiral’s Barge (not sure which Admiral, but nice to loan us his barge). This is courtesy of Ashley Yetman and if you want to sign up contact her. Also, there is a dress code, I am guessing some sort of business casual attire. Ashley’s email is: apyl@comcast.net to sign up for this. As it gets closer, I will have a proper schedule of events, but for now, I need to get the word out for some of these sign ups.
2) Luau at the Hale Koa on Thursday evening. If you want to go, we only have 50 seats reserved and only about 18 spots left the last time I checked. Call the Hale Koa directly at: 808-955-0555 and prompt #2 for Events, tell them you want to reserve your number of seats with the “Navy 85” group. Cost is $64.95 per person. We will meet at the Beach Bar at the Hale Koa at 1730 and the Luaa begins at 1830. Fireworks after  the Luau next to the Hale Koa courtesy of the Hilton resort. The Hale Koa is a short Uber/Taxi ride from the Marriott Waikiki, we will not have group transport for this event.
3) Friday Morning we are still putting together an Island Tour hosted by Rich and will keep updating that. Email him directly for info and to sign up at:richardwtilghman@gmail.com or message him on Facebook (best method) . Sounds fun and casual and great for anyone new to Oahu. Friday evening, I am working on our Class of ’85 Happy Hour to fire us up for the game on Saturday and to welcome those who are arriving that day. I have a couple options in the works and will email the group soon with the final plan. This would be from around 1700-1900 with dinner in small groups that evening at any of the local restaurants. (Get on Trip Advisor now get your research done, I will publish my list soon of places I have eaten at in Waikiki and enjoyed). If we get a large group, I can try and make a reservation or the event we end up doing may be dinner and drinks all in one. Stay tuned…..
4) Saturday Tailgate and Game. We are partnering with the local USNA Alumni Chapter for a full blown tailgate starting around 1300 with the game kickoff at 1700. Food and beverages included for $50 per person. I am working directly with the U of Hawaii ticket office on a seating block and now that we are growing to about 100 or more, I surprised them with our success. I think they can still keep us all generally together in a lower level end zone area. The tickets will be $40 per person and will be distributed at the various events or tailgate. The local Chapter President works for a tour company and can provide us with all our transport needs and I will soon have a breakdown of costs associated for all our events. The big transport will be to and from the tailgate/game from the Marriott Hotel and the Hale Koa and one other hotel if needed. Other events will include the Friday Island tour and the pool/beach party at Rich’s house in Kailua Beach area on Sunday, departing around 12:00 from the hotels.
5) Sunday Pool and Beach Party at Rich Tilghman’s. This will be transportation and a donation to Rich to cover food/beverages and possible entertainment. Once again, more to follow on this.
So, as you can see, quite a bit going on and quite a bit of it TBA. Plan on me collecting money in advance for the tailgate, game tickets and transportation via my paypal account or a personal check mailed to me (although I much prefer paypal). When I finalize these events and costs, I will reach out to you and start collecting money in advance for this. Worst case, I can collect from you in person in Hawaii. My commitment was quality events for those of you traveling this long distance and with the help of Ashley and Rich and the local USNA Alumni Chapter, I am pretty sure we will live up to the ’85 standard!!
Please now contact me directly with questions or comments about this trip via email, texts or phone calls to the number on this email. I will help me make sure everyone has what they need. Here is a list of those classmates attending:

For those with Whatsapp, I have started a group chat for those attending, message me on the App and I will add the our private group I created for this event. For those of you not using Whatsapp, give it a try and I can add you to the group. It’s a great way to communicate and not clog up your personal text message space and it’s very secure. Otherwise, we will use this email group and the USNA ’85 Facebook to communicate with each other.  We also plan on collecting pictures from the various events and informal get togethers and post them to Facebook, the class website, and possibly Flickr/Shutterfly.  If you haven’t subscribed to the class website, please do to keep appraised of the activities for this trip and future ones.
Thanks for signing up for the trip and being patient as we build this great event! Stay tuned….

Greetings Classmates,

As we all enjoy our summer and summer vacations, it’s time start the final phase planning of the Class of ’85 trip to Hawii in late August on your near term calendar, as well as the late October San Diego trip next on your radar scopes. We have about 90 Classmates and family members attending the Hawii Trip which is awesome and once again makes us the “Class with Class” as no other class will have half this number. Here is where we stand and I am still finalizing a few things, but need to get the word to everyone now as the final pieces come into place. Here is what I have in chronological order:

1) Thursday morning at 0845 we have a tour of the the Pearl Harbor area on the Admiral’s Barge. Please contact Ashley Yetman ASAP if you are interested as there are limited spots. Her contact info is: apy@comcast.net. Ashley has also posted this event on our Class Facebook post and you can messenger her there.

2) Thursday evening, classmate Rich Tilghman has arranged for those interested to attend the Hale Koa Luaa, Thursday, August 30th. Meet for drinks at 5:30 at the Barefoot bar for the 6:30pm dinner and show.  “Navy 85” 808-955-0555 Aug 30th. You have contact the Hale Koa directly to attend, 808-955-0555 and tell them you are with the Navy 85 group. The deadline is July 24th at 2300 EST to do reserve. Remember, tell them you are booking as part of “Navy ’85”. There are fireworks next door at the Hilton that go off right after the Luaa ends. Rich says it is an amazing show and fireworks so don’t miss it. Contact Rich at richardwtilghman@gmail.com or he in the class Facebook group and always answers messages promptly with questions.

3) Friday, Rich has also volunteered to do a half day Island Tour for anyone interested. The dynamics of the tour will depend on the level of interest. Please contact Rich on Facebook or at the above email address to attend a tour he that is still in the making.

4) Friday evening, we will have a 1600-1800 Happy Hour at the Marriott Waikiki Beach, which is the class hotel. This will be an event designed to allow for classmates to then go off and enjoy a nice dinner at one of the many local restaurants. I will reach out directly to those who have signed up on the class website to share a list of who is going so people can look network with each other on dinner plans. I have request a cash bar type event and am still working with Marriott staff on this and will post final details when I have them.

5) Pre and post game tailgate for the football game against Hawaii on Saturday, September 1st; we will be teaming up with the local USNA Alumni Chapter for a fun tailgate event. This will include bus transport to and from the Hale Koa and Marriott hotels and game tickets in our class block. Once again, you need to sign up on the class website: http://1985.usnaclasses.net so I have an accurate head count and can set up payment options. Game tickets will be lower level endzone seats I arranged directly through the U of Hawaii football ticket office and will cost $40. Soon, I will start collecting money for tickets, tailgate and bus transport directly to my paypal account so I can pay for this stuff ahead of time.

6) Sunday, September 2nd, Rich Tighlman and his chihuahua will be hosting a party at his house and a beach trip for the day. He lives 1/2 block from one of the nicest beaches in the world: Kailua Beach. It will be a meet at 1200 from hotels for transport to his house where he has a nice pool area and it will be a full day of fun at his beachside bungalo and the beach. Once again, please contact Rich and his chihuahua to RSVP so that we can get a count regarding transportation, food, drinks, speedos (Charlie Giles?), etc. Once again, transport leaving from the Hale Koa and Marriott Waikiki Hotels and returning when the fun runs out.

We have a GREAT turnout for this event so far away and I appreciate this and think we have done a good job of putting a full schedule of events together for those making this trip. I want to thank Ashley and Rich for all their help and support in putting this weekend in place and please sign up on the class website and/or contact me with any questions. The Navy/Notre Dame weekend is coming into view and I will soon be coming out with more specifics on this weekend, but we will have a full schedule of events for those coming to San Diego for that weekend as well. Sign ups are on the class website as well and it helps me to have you sign up in advance. If you are going to Hawaii, PLEASE sign up for our events ASAP so we can do proper planning. I will soon have the tailgate info and will reach out to collect money for the transport, game tickets and tailgate events; so stay tuned.

Outside of all of the travel events, we are gearing up for another great season of home Navy Football games as well as events for the Army/Navy game in Philadelphia and will keep putting out info on these events as the plans come together. If anyone lives in or near a city where there is a home game and wants to help us sponsor a tailgate event or class party, PLEASE let me know and I can help you support it. So, keep enjoying your summer as I am and focus on these upcoming events if you plan to attend. Go Navy and Beat Everyone this season…. MOST OF ALL: ARMY!!

Class of 1985,

First off, Happy 33rd Anniversary to our great class. I salute the 33 years of service to our country and to our communities and our families over the last 33 years by all our classmates. It’s so great to see everyone’s Facebook pictures over the last several years that those in our Facebook group have been sharing (no fake news here!). Pictures of our Academy days, days in the fleet or corps and all the years since. Great family photos of our kids doing amazing things as they all follow in our footsteps now that we approach retirement and hopefully more travel to Class events and Navy Football games together!

Speaking of Class travel, I have an important update for upcoming Class trips. First off Hawaii; I have been offered seats in the Navy section and since they were upper deck end zone seats I reached out directly to the University of Hawaii ticket office and they have committed to giving our class a block of tickets on the lower Navy Sideline. They cannot commit to the exact location yet, but that a block of seats will be available for the numbers we need. I will use the sign ups from our class website and reach out to those attending and confirm ticket orders since I will have to collect money from you via PayPal for these tickets and then have Rich Tighlman pick them up for us in Hawaii and get them to those attending prior to the game. More details to follow, but if have signed up to attend that game, you will hear from me. If you have not, please go on our class website and sign up to attend so I have you on the list as needing tickets (http://1985.usnaclasses.net). We are still working the full schedule of events for that weekend that will be published in the next few weeks, so stay tuned and contact me with any questions. News on the Navy vs. Notre Dame trip to San Diego; we have sold out our 150 seat block for that game. Tickets are still available via ticket master, so you can still attend the game and still attend all the class events that weekend if you were not able to buy seats in our class section. I still urge you to join us if you want to attend a great weekend with many of your classmates in a beautiful setting. The schedule of events will also be published soon for that San Diego trip and I will have to start collecting money for the Friday cocktail reception and the Saturday pre and post game tailgates, also via PayPal. Stay tuned and if you have not signed up, once again, you can do so on the Class of ’85 website. In addition to our 2 away game trips, we are making plans for the normal home Class of ’85 tailgates for this season and for tailgating at the Army/Navy game in Philadelphia. So, lots to look forward to this year.

I want to take a moment and congratulate everyone who has a high school or college student graduating this year as we ourselves celebrate our 33rd Anniversary of our Commencement. My oldest is graduating high school and I am a very proud father as I see him venture into the world like we did 33 very “short” years ago today.

As always, Go Navy and Beat Army!   Bob Smith ’85

Email 30 Apr 2018

This is the last day to order Navy vs. Notre Dame Football game tickets and our Class only has a few left in our NAAA block of tickets, so if you are a procrastinating, NOW IS THE TIME!! Here is the skinny on what you need to do:

1) Go to: www.Navysports.com

2) Click the tab for TICKETS

3) Click the tab for ORDER TICKETS ONLINE

4) Click the tab for BUY TICKETS

5) Click to tab for PROMOTION CODES

On that page, enter 1985 in the block and you will be sent to a window to buy tickets in our block for $100 each (plus a small service charge per order). If this does not work, it probably means our block is sold out. As of this morning, there was about 25 tickets left. NAAA is sold out of their allotment of seats and you will then have to buy tickets from Ticketmaster somewhere out of the Navy and Class section. Thanks for those of you who have purchased tickets and signed up so far and I hope that those who want to be part of this amazing event, can get your tickets today if you are interesting in going. Go go the Class of ’85 website to register for this game and for the Hawaii game events if you have not done so but are planning so I can have an idea of how many are attending. I will have an update soon on tickets for the Hawaii game, they have not been released by the home team yet for purchase. When I do know something, you will know it too. Thanks and here is the link for the USNA ’85 website:

Our numbers are growing for both events and I am really looking forward to great times ahead for the 2018 football season and USNA ’85.

Go Navy and stay tuned for more information.

Greetings Class of ’85,

Now that we are on Spring Break, it will be summer soon and then, before we know it, Navy Football season! NAAA has given our Class a block of 150 tickets together for the Navy v Notre game at Qualcomm Stadium on October 27th (Time is still TBA, but I am guessing it will be an early game for those of us on the West Coast). The tickets are $100 each and located together in sections P 48-49. (There is an $8 per transaction fee added on to your order). If you want to sit with other classmates, I suggest you place one order together like those of in 16th Company did this morning. Here is the link for the NAAA Ticket Window for this game:

Our PROMO Code is: 1985 and the group tickets are ONLY AVAILABLE UNTIL April 31st, so GET ON IT. The Class block of rooms at the Westin hotel (50 rooms) is currently sold to 40 rooms, so only 10 left. If I sell out 50 rooms, I can get more, but that opportunity is fading FAST, so if you want to stay with the Class and plan on attending the game, NOW IS THE TIME! The room reservation web link is:

I have a contract in place with a local Brewpub near out hotel called the Quad for a pre and post game indoor tailgate and will have motor coach transportation from the Quad to and from the game. For now, I just need you to go on the USNA ’85 Class website and sign up that you are attending the game. Use the above links to reserve your room and buy your tickets and I will have more information about such events as the Friday Night Cocktail reception at our hotel, the Saturday game and tailgate and perhaps a Friday golf outing and other events related to that weekend. The Class website is:

Please use the links on our website to sign up for that weekend; for now though, get your rooms and tickets locked up. I will have more information in the near future with a schedule of events for the entire weekend and some additional sign ups.

If anyone is wondering about the Hawaii Game, please use the class website to sign up and get your rooms reserved. NAAA does not have tickets yet and they are controlled by the home team, so when I have that info, I will promptly pass it along. Call, text or email with questions as always: robertsmith5@att.net, C: (502) 432-6185. Go Navy and Happy Spring!!

Dear Class of ’85,

As some of us are hiding inside and counting down the end of the “Dark Ages” of winter, I thought I would throw a little sunshine into everyone’s life. I have been busy behind the scenes putting together and finalizing plans for the Navy away games at Hawaii against the University of Hawaii on Saturday September 1st and for the Navy vs. Notre Dame game in San Diego on Saturday October 27th. Below is some information about each weekend:

Honolulu, Hawaii Trip August 30-September 2, 2018:
Navy plays the University of Hawaii in football Saturday, September 1 with time TBD. I have reserved a block of rooms at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa. The block starts Thursday August 30th and has rooms until Sunday September 2nd at a special group rate of $204.00 per night for Ocean view rooms. As always, we will plan some sort of Friday night event and a pre and post game party. Those are still in the works and I will announce them as plans are finalized. For now, you can book rooms and get your travel arranged now. I will also have a Class of ’85 ticket block reserved and information on that will be put out after NAAA starts selling them to us, but we have a firm commitment on both games for our classmates to sit together, so please do not worry about purchasing tickets. You can reserve rooms at the Marriott by calling: (800) 367- 5370 or (808) 922-6611; tell them you want to reserve in the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1985 room block for the nights of 8/30-9/2 and make sure you are quoted the group rate.

San Diego, CA Trip October 25-October 28, 2018:
Navy plays Notre Dame at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday October 27, time TBD. I have reserved a block fo 50 rooms at the Westin Gas Lamp District, San Diego for a group rate of $249.00 a night. The link to reserve rooms is: https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/events/start.action?id=1707110058&key=22EF9EF9
I anticipate we will sell more than 50 rooms and the hotel has agreed to open up more rooms if they have them available when we ask. This is why it is important that if you think you are going, to reserve early. You have until 10/22 at 4:00 pm to cancel without penalty. I have a Friday night Happy Hour event planned at the hotel and on Saturday I have pre and post game events planned at the Quad Gaslamp Tavern along with Bus transport to and from the Quad to the game. The Quad has a nice private room we can use and it is about 200 yards from the hotel. For this of you not familiar with the Gas Lamp District, our hotel is in the heart of a large dining and entertainment district that is quite famous for its restaurant and pubs right in the heart of San Diego; close to the waterfront and to the airport. There is no need to rent a car, as you can walk, Uber or take the local trains to just about anything. I am working on a golf event for Friday, if we have enough people interested to this and we will also have a small get together on Thursday for anyone coming to town that day. As with the Hawaii game, I have a firm commitment from NAAA for a Class block of seats at the game so there is no need to worry about tickets, just wait until I publish this information for purchase.
I am going to have a sign ups for both trips on the Class of ’85 website: http://1985.usnaclasses.net

Please sign up for rooms using the above information and for the events you want to attend on our website; this will allow me to have enough rooms and space at events; and to give NAAA a heads up on the number of game tickets we will be asking for. At some point, I will use the data collected to reach out will collect money for certain things such as the pre and post game parties and bus transport and to order our football tickets from NAAA. For now, I just need to get estimated numbers I can use for planning and will eventually use that to firm up my event numbers and money collection. So, for now, take a look at your fall schedules and make plans to join us in Hawaii or San Diego or BOTH! Get on those hotel sites and on the class website and sign up PLEASE. As always, if you have questions or suggestions, I am available. Email: robertsmith5@att.net or (502) 432-6185.

Stay warm for now!

Regards, Bob Smith ‘85

The time has come to sign-up for our mini-reunion event during the Navy vs Hawaii football game held out in Honolulu, Hawaii! Our president has been planning for this with more fun yet to be put on the agenda.

Please take the time to fill out this form so that we can get a count of how many people are planning to attend each event.  This will help with the counts, facilities, food, and/or other logistics needed to ensure a high quality event.

No money is needed at the moment. This is just for planning purposes.  Thank you very much!
