Class of ’85,
Greetings and welcome to Fall. I want, first off, to send out a HUGE thank you to all who gave to the class tailgate fund. I have, to date, collected over $2500 for Class tailgates and we are planning on some realy fun tailgates for remainder of the Navy home season and beyond:
- Temple on 10/13 at 1530
- Houston on 10/20 at 1530
- Tulsa on 11/17 at 1530
We will have fully catered tailgates for both the Temple and Houston games. Stay tuned that week for the SignUp Genius to announce the menus. We know that we will cater the Houston game from Mission Barbeque and the Temple game from Bo Brooks catering. Also planning a pre-game event for the Army-Navy game this year for both Friday night and then again on Saturday prior to the game. Stay tuned for more on those two events.
Now, an update and reminder for the San Diego weekend. Sign ups have been slow so far, less than 20 people signed up for the Friday and Saturday events. We sold 150 tickets at least for the game, so I planned my events based on those numbers to make sure we had the proper venue and menu. So, please reference my last email and the class website for the sign up information on that weekend. Here is my last email if you need it for reference:

As you can see, we have a full weekend of events planned, the area near the Class hotel is full of places to see and things to do, so lots of opportunity between class events to make this into a nice vacation. If anyone is interested in playing golf on Friday morning, please contact me so we can put an outing together at a local course if there is enough interest. I will collect money for these events in the following manner:
Cutoff for these events is October 15, 2018. I have to get firm numbers to all my vendors by this time. It is helpful to have you sign up and pay sooner rather than later. If you pay via paypal, PLEASE PLEASE indicate you are sending money to Friends and Family and NOT a business or they deduct a service charge from your payment that I cannot recoup. Also, PLEASE PLEASEindicate what you are paying for and the number. For example: 2 Friday event, 2 Tailgate and 2 bus. I NEED this information as you can imagine. This is going to be another amazing weekend and as of now, I anticipate around 150 people or more attending the tailgate and game. For those in the hotel, the Friday night event is both easy and elegant with a great outdoor location by the pool. I am also working with Jim Berdeguez on a special edition football jersey for this event and will have details soon. All this information will be on the class website as usual. Please call, text or email me with questions. I can assure all of you I have worked hard to maximum value at an affordable price and the events will hopefully show this effort. Eco Caterers is an organic and environmentally friendly company that I am proud to be able to partner with for our Saturday Tailgate.
One more thing: Thanks to all who have donated to the Class of ’85 Tailgate Fund, as of today I have received over $1500 in donations and that number seems to grow every day. This helps me fund this year’s tailgating efforts and frees up class money I can use for the 35th Class Reunion in 2020, the reunion is well in the planning phases. It also helps me with cost overruns on these large events like the one in Hawaii. So, get signed up if you are coming or make travel plans if you have not made them yet and join us for what promises to be another GREAT Class of ‘85 “Mini-Reunion” as we just did in Hawaii. Cheers and Beat Memphis, I look forward to seeing many of you in San Diego.
PS: If you signed up previously for this weekend on the class website, I still need you to sign up and pay for these events. That sign up was to give us preliminary numbers only.
Bob Smith ‘85
SO, always, PLEASE help me help you and if you are coming, go ahead and sign up. If you cannot make it and have tickets to sell, I have takers for your tickets. PLEASE contact me with questions or comments regarding San Diego or any other event or class matter. Once again, thanks for those who contributed to our GREAT Class of ’85 Tailgates. (I was also able to rent our own dedicated class portable restroom from your donations which has received rave reviews).
Go Navy and BEAT EVERYONE…. Especially Army. Bob Smith ’85

I am writing this looking at surfers on Waikiki Beach and getting ready for the morning walk with my wiife Sherry towards Diamond Head all because Navy is playing U of Hawaii Saturday at 1700 local Hawaii time. We have a GREAT crowd from our Class in attendance; as usual, the most of any individual graduating class (115 tickets sold). Thanks to those who made the trip and I will see you all this week if I have not seen you already. Check out our Class of ’85 Facebook group for the pictures we will post as we cheer the Mids to their first win of the season. So, let’s talk about our first home game. Charlie Smith and the crew in Annapolis have sent me this to attach:
**************** Home Tailgate Information ************************************
I hope everyone is looking forward to another fantastic season of Navy Football. Navy hosts Memphis for the home opener at 3:30 on Sept 8th and our tailgate crew is already working on another great season of tailgating to complement our Midshipmen’s glory on the field.
With last year’s investments in the tent, trailer and gear, we have all the ingredients in place for an excellent tailgating experience. We are using the sign up page again this year and you can find the signup for the Memphis game here: https://www.signupgenius.com/
The theme for the first game is Memphis BBQ. Charlie and Bill have agreed to cook ribs to get things kicked off. We will have cold beer on tap and other beverages to keep you cool. Please sign up so we can get a good count and plan to bring something to share with Classmates.
Don’t hesitate to reach out to Charlie @ Charles.M.Smith@gmail.com if you have suggestions or questions. Your feedback is welcome.
Go Navy – Beat Memphis
Home tailgates will follow the same theme as last year, we have the Class of ’85 Tent, trailer and tailgate site ready to roll out next weekend. Last year everyone pitched in to make this new and improved tailgate site possible. Those who came to any home saw just how nice it is to have such a quality tailgate each and every game. In order to help me fund class tailgating again this year, I will ask that anyone interested in a one time contribution to our Class tailgate fund ($25, $50 or $100) please send it via Paypal or Venmo to: MD11driver85@gmail.com and PLEASE indicate it is for the Class of ’85 Tailgate Fund being sent to friends or family. This will allow me to budget for catering and for beer and wine, as well as continued improvements to our Class of ’85 tailgate experience both at home and away games. We will still have our “Honor box” at tailgates, these donations will help add to the things we can do and will keep the food hot and the beer and wine flowing.
Next week, I will be sending out an email dedicated to our Class of ’85 trip to San Diego for the Notre Dame game on October 27th. I have all the events planned out, so it is time to start collecting money and finalizing my head counts at all the events. There is still plenty of openings to join us on this trip, the hotel block has a few rooms and the Friday night party and tailgate is WIDE OPEN. You can still get tickets to the game from local sources. We are over 100 people signed up for this weekend and I would love to see us reach 150 or more. Stay tuned next week as I roll out the schedule of events and payment information. For now, enjoy the Navy game late Saturday on CBS Sports Network at 2300 EST and look for the Class of ’85 about the 20 yard line on the Navy side in rows 6-10. Get signed up for Memphis if you are going on September 8th and help Charlie out AND, donate a few dollars to our class tailgate fund if you will.
Thanks and BEAT HAWAII!!

Greetings Class of ’85,
It’s time for an update on things as we are about to begin the 2018 Football Season. First off, I am proud to say we are taking nearly 100 Classmates and families/friends to Honolulu for the opening game of the 2018 Navy Season on September 1st against the U of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. There is still availability for this weekend if you want to join us. I am finalizing my ticket, tailgate and Class dinner numbers on August 15th. So, be like a few others who just said: “What the H… We are going to Hawaii”. Airfares seem to be pretty reasonable and I can still get you the Class group rate at the Marriott Waikiki Beach. If you are interested, contact me ASAP. If anyone who thought they had signed up for this trip and you have not been receiving our small group emails and texts, you NEED to contact me ASAP. Next, I am finalizing plans for the October 27th game against Notre Dame in San Diego. Although our class block of tickets is sold out, you can get them from other sources and still join us in San Diego for the weekend. That schedule of events will be published in the next few weeks and I will start collecting money for the tailgate and Friday night cocktail reception. We will be over 170 strong in San Diego or more likely over 200, so why not get on board NOW with this trip?? We will have a Thursday night kickoff happy hour in the Gas Lamp district, Friday night cocktail party, Saturday pre and post game indoor tailgate at the Quad Pub in the Gas Lamp quarter and of course the game. I am looking for someone who lives in San Diego who might like to organize a golf outing for Thursday or Friday morning in San Diego. Classmate Jim Berdeguez and I are designing an ’85 Special Edition Football Jersey for sale starting that weekend to commemorate this event.
Our normal Class of ’85 Tailgate parties will be on for all home games this season. That information will be provided as we get closer to our first home game. If you are coming to a Navy game, you know that ’85 will always have a great tailgate. I am working on events for the Army/Navy weekend, so if you happen to live in Philly and want to help me out, I am appreciative of some help for this year’s game on December 8th. Also, if you live in a city where there is a Navy away game and want to put a class event together, I welcome anyone doing that. Now that Navy plays in the AAC, we play in some fun places. Also, I have started working our 35th Reunion in September of 2020. This is tentative and based on Navy finalizing the 2020 football schedule, BUT, I am looking at a home game now scheduled for September 12, 2020 (Hint: Save the date UFN). Westin Hotel reserved and exploring great options for all events. I will be starting a committee next year for help with all major events of our reunion. (I am getting too old to do all this stuff solo any more).
Enjoy the remainder of your summer and start thinking about Navy football and joining your classmates in Hawaii, San Diego, Annapolis or Philadelphia this season.
As always, Go Navy…. Beat Army! (and everyone else)

This is the last day to order Navy vs. Notre Dame Football game tickets and our Class only has a few left in our NAAA block of tickets, so if you are a procrastinating, NOW IS THE TIME!! Here is the skinny on what you need to do:
1) Go to: www.Navysports.com
2) Click the tab for TICKETS
3) Click the tab for ORDER TICKETS ONLINE
4) Click the tab for BUY TICKETS
5) Click to tab for PROMOTION CODES
On that page, enter 1985 in the block and you will be sent to a window to buy tickets in our block for $100 each (plus a small service charge per order). If this does not work, it probably means our block is sold out. As of this morning, there was about 25 tickets left. NAAA is sold out of their allotment of seats and you will then have to buy tickets from Ticketmaster somewhere out of the Navy and Class section. Thanks for those of you who have purchased tickets and signed up so far and I hope that those who want to be part of this amazing event, can get your tickets today if you are interesting in going. Go go the Class of ’85 website to register for this game and for the Hawaii game events if you have not done so but are planning so I can have an idea of how many are attending. I will have an update soon on tickets for the Hawaii game, they have not been released by the home team yet for purchase. When I do know something, you will know it too. Thanks and here is the link for the USNA ’85 website:
Our numbers are growing for both events and I am really looking forward to great times ahead for the 2018 football season and USNA ’85.
Go Navy and stay tuned for more information.

Greetings Class of ’85,
Now that we are on Spring Break, it will be summer soon and then, before we know it, Navy Football season! NAAA has given our Class a block of 150 tickets together for the Navy v Notre game at Qualcomm Stadium on October 27th (Time is still TBA, but I am guessing it will be an early game for those of us on the West Coast). The tickets are $100 each and located together in sections P 48-49. (There is an $8 per transaction fee added on to your order). If you want to sit with other classmates, I suggest you place one order together like those of in 16th Company did this morning. Here is the link for the NAAA Ticket Window for this game:
Our PROMO Code is: 1985 and the group tickets are ONLY AVAILABLE UNTIL April 31st, so GET ON IT. The Class block of rooms at the Westin hotel (50 rooms) is currently sold to 40 rooms, so only 10 left. If I sell out 50 rooms, I can get more, but that opportunity is fading FAST, so if you want to stay with the Class and plan on attending the game, NOW IS THE TIME! The room reservation web link is:
I have a contract in place with a local Brewpub near out hotel called the Quad for a pre and post game indoor tailgate and will have motor coach transportation from the Quad to and from the game. For now, I just need you to go on the USNA ’85 Class website and sign up that you are attending the game. Use the above links to reserve your room and buy your tickets and I will have more information about such events as the Friday Night Cocktail reception at our hotel, the Saturday game and tailgate and perhaps a Friday golf outing and other events related to that weekend. The Class website is:
Please use the links on our website to sign up for that weekend; for now though, get your rooms and tickets locked up. I will have more information in the near future with a schedule of events for the entire weekend and some additional sign ups.
If anyone is wondering about the Hawaii Game, please use the class website to sign up and get your rooms reserved. NAAA does not have tickets yet and they are controlled by the home team, so when I have that info, I will promptly pass it along. Call, text or email with questions as always: email@example.com, C: (502) 432-6185. Go Navy and Happy Spring!!

After what turned out to be a spectacular tailgate and an even better game against Air Force this past Saturday, we are 5-0 and setting our sites on American Athletic Conference foe Memphis in Memphis this weekend. Classmate and FedEx Pilot Dave Island will be hosting an away tailgate at his truck in the Tiger’s stadium parking lot. He will establish himself in the parking lot that morning and you will have to text or call him at: 214-912-4848 to get that location, or email him in advance and coordinate at: firstname.lastname@example.org Please offer to bring some food or beverages and help Dave out for this tailgate. I think Dave will have cold beers and I thank him for doing this and hope some of you can make this game and cheer Navy on to a key win in our conference and quest for an AAC western title.
We are getting ready for the UCF game on 10/2, our Homecoming weekend. We will be at our usual spot tailgating for the 1530 game. This game is a fully catered tailgate, but we still need volunteers and people to bring a few items such as drinks and ice. Please sign up no matter what, if you can bring something or volunteer or just “I’m coming”, so we can get an accurate head count. Here is the Sign up link: http://www.signupgenius.com/
Thanks again to Charlie and Kathleen Smith for being amazing tailgate hosts, thank them if you get a chance for all their hard work in setting this up, storing and stocking our tailgate trailer and cooking food. Remember to go to the USNA ’85 website at: http://1985.usnaclasses.
Wow, a lot to digest, but all good! So, get in touch with Dave Island if you are going to the Memphis game for his tailgate. If you are coming to the UCF game, please sign up today. If you have any extra tickets, please contact me and I can hook up classmates in need of tickets. That is all for today, have a great week and I will do an update next week after we beat Memphis and prepare for UCF. Go Navy, Beat the Tigers! Bob Smith ’85 email@example.com or c:502-432-6185
PS: Did anyone see a small hearing aid that was lost this past weekend? Let me know if you did. We sill start having a lost and found box for future games for items left behind by accident.

We are coming off a great win against Cincinnati last weekend and another successful ’85 tailgate. Charlie Smith and his crew had the grill fired up and the brats and Chili were served up with cold beers. We are looking ahead to the Air Force home game on October 7th. We will be in full force next weekend in Annapolis. Here is a note from Charlie regarding our plans:
